Samurai (侍) were the hereditary military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan from the late 12th century to their abolition in 1876.

Samurai had high prestige and special privileges such as wearing two swords. They cultivated the Bushidō codes of martial virtues, indifference to pain, and unflinching loyalty, engaging in many local battles.

Bushidō (武士道, "The Way of the Warrior") is a moral code concerning Samurai attitudes, behavior, and lifestyle. While there are multiple versions of Bushidō, the code is generally typified by Eight Virtues according to Nitobe Inazō in the Meiji Period (1900) - "The ways which fighting nobles should observe in their daily life as in their vocation":

  1. Righteousness (義)
  2. Bravery, Heroic Courage (勇)
  3. Benevolence, Compassion (仁)
  4. Respect (礼)
  5. Honesty (誠)
  6. Honour (名誉)
  7. Duty and Loyalty (忠義)
  8. Self-Control (自制)

Associated Virtues:

  1. Filial Piety (孝)
  2. Wisdom (智)
  3. Fraternity (悌)
  4. Duty (義理)
